My Skincare Routine for Clear Skin Naturally

Today, I wanted to share with all of you what I use on my face~ everything I use is all natural, and help keep my skin acne free. None of my skin secrets have any chemicals, detergents, artifical fragrances, etc. and, along with cutting out processed foods and sugar, are the reasons why my skin is clear!  The fact that my skin is clear now, and never was when I was using Proactiv, Biore, Clean & Clear, etc. just goes to show that going back to nature is overall better for your health, and your skin!

So let’s begin!

My All Natural Skincare Routine for Acne Prone Skin

My Cleanser is: Honey!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For those of you who viewed My Favorite Natural Products of 2o11 video/post, this will come as no surprise.

Honey is the most wonderful “cleanser” I have used for a long, long time.  It is antibacterial.  Therefore, it helps to heal your acne, and also does not contribute to your acne.  Those are two things that are very hard for me to find from a cleanser.

Honey also does not dry out my skin.  It is actually quite moisturizing!  Another wonderful thing about honey is that it is water soluble.  This means that once water touches the honey, it starts to dissolve.  Honey leaves no residue on my face, which is another plus.

How to: Just take about half a spoonful of honey and wet your face.  Then, take small amounts of the honey and start rubbing the honey all over your face.  Finally, rinse away!  It’s easy, and takes the same amount of time as a regular cleanser, without all of the harsh chemicals, detergents, etc.

The Requirements: Please use either local pure honey (support local beekeepers!) or USDA certified organic honey.  A study was done within the past few months that confirmed that a significant amount of regular honey from grocery stores and stores like Wal-mart, Walgreens, CVS, etc. are ultra filtered honey~bottom line this means that it is either not honey at all, or honey from China (which can be diluted~with high fructose corn syrup, rice syrup, etc.~, or it can be contaminated~with antibiotics, lead, etc.~, or it can be not honey at all).  There is no reason to ultra filter honey other than to hide where that “honey” is coming from.  So please use local pure honey or USDA certified organic honey!  This way it is definitely honey 🙂

Precaution: Please do not try using honey if you are allergic!

My Acne and Acne Scar Treatment: Limes!

Limes are a wonderful little fruit, and are just as wonderful as a night treatment for healing acne and fading acne scars.  I found using limes to not dry out my skin, and definitely helped lessen the appearance of my scars on my face over a few months.  Lemons could also be used instead of limes, but I found lemons to dry out my skin, and also irritated my skin (which limes did not).

How to: After you have cleansed your skin, cut a lime until you have one small slice (I typically would cut a lime in half, and then cut one of those halves into 4 pieces.  I would then place all of the lime except for one slice into the fridge to use later).  Take one of those slices and squeeze the juice into a small bowl.  Then, dab a clean finger into the bowl and gently pat onto any acne and acne scars on your face.  Repeat until lime juice is on all of your acne and acne scars.  Let dry.

The Requirements: Preferably use an organic lime, but conventional limes work as well.  Also, please use fresh lime juice.  It is unknown how long presqueezed lime and lemon juices have been in those plastic containers.

Precaution: Only use this acne and acne scar treatment at night.  Lime juice and lemon juice both photosensitize your skin (make your skin more sensitive to sunlight).

My Moisturizer: Argan Oil

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yes, an oil is my moisturizer, and yes, I do have acne prone skin.  I know this sounds ridiculous, but it does help.  Argan oil has helped to balance my skin, moisturizes wonderfully, and does not cause acne!

How to: After cleansing your face and applying the lime juice, simply dampen your fingers and your face (where you are going to apply the argan oil).  Take one or two drops (not dropper-fulls, but drops) of oil onto your fingers.  Rub gently between your fingers and then dab onto the skin where it is needed.  You can apply one or two more drops onto your face if needed.

Requirements: Preferably use organic argan oil.  If it is cold pressed, and better yet, the first cold pressing, it has even higher amounts of essential fatty acids than compared to just refined and pure argan oil (which would be cheaper).

Also, there is a difference in quality~ the Josie Maran Organic Argan Oil which is what I use on my face (and is the first cold pressing) feels much lighter on my skin and soaks into my skin quicker than the ArganUSA Argan Oil (which I use on the rest of my body because it is less expensive, but it is not the first cold pressing) feels just a little bit heavier and takes a little bit longer to soak in.

I personally recommend Josie Maran Cosmetics Argan Oil for the face, or any USDA Certified Organic Argan Oil.

Precautions: With argan oil, more is not better~Less is more in this situation.  Use only a few drops at first, then see if you need more.  Also, either your fingers or your skin needs to be damp for the oil to penetrate into the skin.  Otherwise, you will feel you need more argan oil, and it will take much longer to be absorbed by the skin.

5 Months of No Processed Foods and No Processed Sugar!

I can hardly believe that it’s been 5 months since I started the No Processed Foods and No Processed Sugar Challenge (aka the Real Food Challenge) on April 23, 2011! It’s been a really interesting 5 months.

Update on my Energy Level

Honestly, my energy level has been really low recently. However, this has not been caused by what I’m eating but much more based on other things going on in my life: crazy long commuting times, lack of sleep, flooding scare, etc. So, my energy level probably won’t be going up really quickly anytime soon. I’ll just keep drinking the yerba mate with honey til then 🙂

Update on my Acne

From the middle of July until the middle of August I wasn’t home (No, I wasn’t on vacation) and so I just couldn’t be as strict with what I ate and didn’t eat. So, my acne did start showing up again.

What was awesome though is that once I was back home from the middle of August until now, I’ve been pretty consistent with what I have been eating (other than one day which I basically ate whatever and so I felt physically horrible for a couple days after).

So, my acne has really been improving. What’s interesting is that my acne really is related to what I’m eating. So, whenever I’m eating just real food, my skin begins to clear up.

This is a huge thing for me because I normally would have four pimples starting every week (if not more pimples). And, my acne was mostly cystic acne. The pimples were just so painful. Now, my acne isn’t nearly as painful, and most of the pimples come to a head (instead of maybe just slowly going away).

Except for the occasional pimple, I mostly have only scars on my face anymore. And since I am very fair (aka very pale) the red acne scars are noticable on my skin. However, even they are starting to fade away! So, this no processed foods and no sugar is really working for my skin. It’s just awesome. (I might put up before and after photos of my face~ let me know if you’re interested 🙂 ).

Another one of my minor goals was to possibly lose about 10 pounds (that is the amount of weight that I typically gained during the winter).

I have actually lost 29 lbs since April 23rd, 2011. I went from being around 156 lbs. (This was my weight maybe a week or two into the challenge. I might have lost a couple pounds before this?) down to 127 lbs. in 5 months.

This is incredible. What was so interesting was that I kept thinking when I hit a weight that I would level off there: at 145 lbs, at 140 lbs, at 135 lbs, and even at 130 lbs. And yet, I kept losing weight. I honestly haven’t been 127 lbs. since I was around 12 years old. I was 135 lbs. at 13 years old and in 7th grade. The lowest I was in high school was 145 lbs. so I really thought I wouldn’t go lower than that.

Since I didn’t update during this time on my weight, here’s how it went:

beginning of August- 138 lbs

middle of August- 136 lbs

beginning of September- 130 lbs

on Sept 23- 127 lbs

And there were basically three things that I did: I stopped eating processed foods. I stopped eating sugar. And in June I started doing yoga daily.

I do really want to emphasize that I do not count calories. I believe that if you are eating healthy that you do not need to count them. I just eat until I’m full. I also just find it annoying to count calories. I have enough to look at on the label with ingredients, cholesterol, and saturated fat content. 🙂

Update on Feeling Healthy Goal

I have been feeling healthy (minus the lack of energy). I honestly just consistently feel better when I’m eating real foods and no processed foods or sugar.

I don’t believe I put this into any of my other posts, but I was told by my doctor in August 2010 that I have IBS (aka irritable bowel syndrome). It was probably the the worst summer ever for me because I literally felt so incredibly horrible all the time. There were very few days that I felt even just ok.

Although I was able to get my IBS under control by the end of August 2010, there still would be times from August until May 2011 where I would feel fine and then suddenly I would just feel horrible again. Just the pain itself was really bad, excluding the other symptoms.

Once I started eating no processed foods and no sugar though, I feel great most of the time. The times that I don’t feel good are when I’m not eating as consistently. This is probably the best result I’ve had from this challenge. I love that I can go out and do not have to wonder whether my IBS will make me feel absolutely horrible that day.

I hope that some of my positive results from the No Processed Foods and No Processed Sugar Challenge inspires you to eat healthy too!

Sunny Mother Nature Loves the Adovia Purifying Mud Mask!

I am normally not a mud mask person.  Actually, I’m not really a facial mask person.  Most masks leave my oily, acne-prone skin dry and really tight.  Not only that but none of the ones I’ve tried really do anything for my skin.  The only mask I’ve ever liked was the Principal Secret Advanced Gentle Enzyme Treatment Mask.  This leaves my skin moisturized, not stripped.  Yet, I’ve wanted to try a Dead Sea Mud mask, even though I hadn’t found any mud masks that worked for my skin.  Until now!

The Adovia Purifying Mud Mask is amazing!  I’ve been just getting into using Dead Sea Mud products and this is one of the products I’ve been using for a little over a month now. 

The Adovia mud mask includes Dead Sea Black mud, beeswax, jojoba oil, evening primrose oil, and olive oil in its ingredients.  This mud mask is said to pull out toxins and impurities from your skin that can clog your pores and cause visible signs of aging.  Also, it’s supposed to tighten pores and boost cell renewal while revitalizing your skin. 

Some sort of mud mask, or exfoliating mask really needs to be used once a week to get the dirt and impurities out of our skin that our normal cleansers cannot reach.  Otherwise, the dirt and impurities can cause breakouts, or cause larger pores.

So, why Dead Sea Mud? 

People from around the world travel to the Dead Sea, which is inbetween Israel and Jordan, every year to put mud on their bodies.    This sea has the saltiest water on Earth with an extremely concentrated amount of mineral salts.  It is so concentrated that people who go into the water actually float!  The mud from the Dead Sea is used in skincare because it pulls out toxins and pollutants, and purifies their skin.  It is even said that Cleopatra may have used Dead Sea mud. 

What did I think of the Adovia Purifying Mud Mask?

It really helps with my acne!  Whenever I use this mud mask religiously, I do see a major difference in my skin.  It is a lot clearer and less red.  The acne that I have begins to heal and go away, and no other new acne seems to form.  

However, I have not seen any difference in my pores (they are fairly noticeable) and I don’t know if it’s boosted cell renewal.  These were not two things that I was actually trying to find products for though.  My main focus with my skin is really my acne.

I leave this mask on for about 20 minutes.  Basically until the mud is dry on my face.  There is a little bit of an exfoliation feeling while you wash off the mask.  I normally use this at least twice a week.  However, I have used this before every day for two weeks and that seemed to especially help my skin.  It is recommended that you use this once a week, or as needed.

This mask apparently can be used for all skin types, dry to oily and acne-prone.  Honestly, this is a really moisturizing mud mask.  It does feel a little drying when I’m washing it off (because of the exfoliation) but once it’s completely off, it really leaves my skin feeling soft, smooth, moisturized, and looking noticeably smoother. 

My problem is that I forget to use this!  However, when I don’t use this mud mask, that is when I see more pimples forming, like usual.  This mask especially helps to lessen the amount of acne I have when I’m stressed. 

 Yet, this doesn’t get rid of my acne completely.  Perhaps the other products I’m using on my face right now are hindering it, or it just doesn’t have the strength to clear up my acne.  However, this product really does work wonders for my skin and I will not be without this mud mask!
